Code Club

Science Club

On the 19th and 20th of March the Science Leaders for Semester 1 held a Science Club Appetiser. This appetiser was held to see whether our idea of a Science Club was possible. We had sign up sheets for anyone who liked the experiments we did and would like to join Science Club.

We held a separate day for the Year 1-4s and another for the Year 5-8s. We organised 3 experiments - coke and mentos, kinetic sand and the chocolate taste test. For the coke and mentos experiment we fill up ⅔ of a bottle with coke and then drop 2 mentos into the bottle and quickly did the lid up and shook the bottle. This made the bottle expand and become circle shaped because of the pressure created inside the bottle. We had kinetic sand for people to feel and we explained how it worked. Then we had 2 different types of chocolate (peppermint and milk). We made the girls close their eyes and block their noses and then gave them a piece of chocolate and made them guess which one was which. 50% got this right and 50% got it wrong, because you need your sense of smell to taste.

To organise our Science Club Appetiser we had to plan lots, test the experiments, have a plan B if something didn’t go right and think about assembly notices. It took about 4 weeks to plan all of this and we found using runsheets really helped.

We ended up getting about 80 names down so therefore we will be starting a Science Club in Term 2. The Science Club Appetiser was a success!

ISSA Swimming Sports

‘Take your marks ….. phweet!’ And the whistle blew.

This was a regularly heard phrase on Wednesday 18th March, because it was the ISSA (Independent Schools Sports Association) swimming sports. Many girls from Selwyn House represented our school in these. To qualify for the zones, girls had to come first or second in a championship race in our school swimming sports. Both our school swimming sports and the zones were held at Wharenui Pool, Riccarton.

All the girls swam incredibly well, and some girls have qualified for CPSSA swimming zones (Canterbury Primary Schools Sports Association) or Canterburys. This is the next step up from ISSA, and is where anyone in Canterbury who has qualified for CPSSA will swim. To qualify, you had to come first or second in an ISSA final. The Canterburys are held for both independent schools and public schools, so there are a lot of swimmers, and a lot of competition!

We entered many relay teams, and also lots of individual swimmers. Every race was 50m, so two lengths of the pool. All the girl did amazingly well, and everyone should be proud of their performance. It was a great event, with Selwyn House girls placing in almost every race they were in! Everyone enjoyed, and also, we would like to thank Mrs Bone, who managed us on the day, ran the warm ups and gave us tips, Mrs Taylor (our P.E. teacher), who was also there helping to run it, but she also was very supportive and coached us leading up to school swimming sports and ISSA, and finally to all our parents and supporters who were there on the day to cheer us on. We wish the girls going on to represent our school in the CPSSA the best of luck.

Growth Mindset - Teaching the Year 3 and 4s

GROWTH MINDSET
Teaching the Year 3 and 4s

For our U.O.I we have been looking at what a Growth Mindset is, and how we can have a growth mindset. A Growth Mindset is when you challenge your brain to work harder and learn more, and try your best. A Fixed Mindset is when you already think you are good enough or if you think you can’t do it so you don’t try. People with a Growth Mindset will eventually overtake those with a Fixed Mindset.

Last Tuesday we taught the Year 3 and 4 girls about what a Growth Mindset is. Each group from 8PR had designed a different set of activities. There were a lot of different ways to present the information, from videos to puzzles! To teach the year 3 and 4s was quite challenging, but fun. It taught us a lot about how to teach younger kids and also helped up to put into place what we had learnt ourselves about both Leadership and having a Growth Mindset.

By the end of the session the Year 3 and 4 girls had a great understanding of what it means to have a Growth Mindset - they have even put it into their Essential Agreement for this year!

"I can't do it...yet!"

World Read Aloud Day!

Rendered Image

On Wednesday 4th of March, the Cybrary leaders (Kathleen, Amy and Meg) hosted a school-wide celebration for World Read Aloud day. To celebrate, they asked that the girls come to school dressed as their favourite book character, and brought a book to share with their buddy.

At 8:30, the Cybrary leaders held a special assembly in the Cybrary because we are in New Zealand, and our school starts at 8:30am, (unlike most other schools) we were probably the first school in the world to celebrate World Read Aloud Day! During the assembly, we managed to get the entire school to read a book aloud to their buddies! We read “Hattie and the Fox” by Mem Fox.

There were lots of creative, colourful and interesting costumes. All the girls participated in this day. And some teachers did too!
