Evie's Passion Project

From Egg To Omelette

Goal/Purpose: My goal was to breed chickens, build them a chicken coop to grow up in and have them grow up healthy and strong. My purpose was to breed chickens as I am interested in animals as well as wanting to witness the growth and development of the chicks.

Process:
  • Choose a topic
  • Research chicken breeding
  • Research where to get a chicken coop
  • Get fertile eggs
  • Find out where to get an incubator
  • Meet with my expert and mentor
  • Build a chicken coop
  • Get the chickens’ food
  • Take photos of the chickens

Reflection:
I have learnt so much about chickens and how to breed them at home and in a incubator. I know that in the future I will breed chickens again and I will keep Maisy, Meredith, Missy and Minky and they will be a part of the family with our other chickens. Breeding chickens took a lot of time and effort but I have learnt so much that will help me in the future. In the end I think all of the hard work has payed off and I am very proud of what I have achieved.

Nepal Fundraiser

"In a matter of seconds, Langtang village was wiped off the face of the Earth and, in Kathmandu this week, Habash described what it was like to visit the place where it used to be: ‘It’s so stunning up there. But I just couldn’t look at the beauty of it because it hurt knowing that so much pain is in that area.” - Yasmine Habash, Nepalese earthquake refugee. (Source, The Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/may/17/nepal-earthquake-langtang-village-everyone-was-dead)

As you may know, recently Nepal has suffered greatly from two large earthquakes.

The Selwyn House UNESCO group and a few volunteers decided to run a fundraiser event for the people of Nepal. We organised a house colours mufti as our houses are the same colours as the Nepalese prayer flags. To go with this we asked the girls to bring a $5 donation that we can send to Nepal. As part of the $5 donation we also gave the girls each a flag to write a message on.

Our Nepalese flags are hanging on display in our school courtyard. They look splendid and have messages from all our students on them. We have the prayer flags in the wind, as the Nepalese do this as they believe it allows so that the messages drift to God and those they are meant for. This is part of Nepalese tradition.
Thank you so much to everyone who donated money, wrote a flag and participated in our fundraiser. We are so happy to have had so much support from the girls.

This was a great success and we have raised a grand total of $1,033.70.

Growth Mindset - Teaching the Year 3 and 4s

GROWTH MINDSET
Teaching the Year 3 and 4s

For our U.O.I we have been looking at what a Growth Mindset is, and how we can have a growth mindset. A Growth Mindset is when you challenge your brain to work harder and learn more, and try your best. A Fixed Mindset is when you already think you are good enough or if you think you can’t do it so you don’t try. People with a Growth Mindset will eventually overtake those with a Fixed Mindset.

Last Tuesday we taught the Year 3 and 4 girls about what a Growth Mindset is. Each group from 8PR had designed a different set of activities. There were a lot of different ways to present the information, from videos to puzzles! To teach the year 3 and 4s was quite challenging, but fun. It taught us a lot about how to teach younger kids and also helped up to put into place what we had learnt ourselves about both Leadership and having a Growth Mindset.

By the end of the session the Year 3 and 4 girls had a great understanding of what it means to have a Growth Mindset - they have even put it into their Essential Agreement for this year!

"I can't do it...yet!"
